A MIAM is a mediation information and assessment meeting. Our FMC Accredited mediators can offer MIAMs meetings. A certificate can only be provided by an accredited mediator.

A MIAM is normally necessary before an application can be made to court in relation to arrangements for children and finances. A mediator cannot advise as to whether the MIAM is necessary or whether an exemption applies. A MIAM or initial meeting is also needed before you proceed with mediation so that we can understand more about your situation, and you understand how the mediation process works and what to expect of the mediation process.

We ask you to complete a preliminary information form which we discuss with you confidentially in the meeting. We discuss with you what you would hope to achieve from mediation. We give you information about mediation and other ways of reaching an agreement. We do not advise. We discuss with you ways of preparing for mediation. We then discuss how we can tailor things for you.

If you would both like to proceed, we then liaise with you both about a suitable time for a full mediation meeting. If one or both of you do not wish to proceed or if mediation is not suitable we can provide you with a certificate for court if needed. The certificate can be provided for 4 months and lasts for 4 months. We suggest that we contact you both to invite you to explore mediation and book in for a MIAMs meeting. We can discuss with you when you contact us, whether you would like us to send information about mediation to you both.
